Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce a forthcoming Special Issue of the journal focusing on "Innovative Approaches in Photon Counting Lidar Systems: Techniques, Algorithms and Performance Optimization". Photon counting lidar has emerged as a groundbreaking technology for remote sensing applications, offering exceptional capabilities in high-resolution 3D mapping, environmental monitoring, autonomous navigation, and more. This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive platform for researchers, engineers, and practitioners to present and discuss the latest advancements in photon counting lidar systems.

Original research articles, reviews, and methodological studies that delve into various aspects of photon counting lidar technology are welcome. These encompass novel hardware designs, cutting-edge photon detection methods, advanced signal processing algorithms, and strategies for enhancing system performance and accuracy. Furthermore, we encourage contributions that address challenges in real-world implementation, such as mitigating noise sources, optimizing data acquisition and processing pipelines, and integrating photon counting lidar with other sensor modalities.

In the quest for ever-improving lidar capabilities, this Special Issue also seeks to explore interdisciplinary collaborations that leverage photon counting lidar data. Submissions involving fusion with machine learning, artificial intelligence techniques, and data-driven approaches are of particular interest. By fostering a multidisciplinary discussion, we hope to accelerate the integration of photon counting lidar systems into various applications, spanning environmental monitoring, urban planning, forestry, planetary exploration, and beyond.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Photonics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
