Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is an insidious pathogen which causes significant morbidity and mortality. Chronic HCV infection leading to liver cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma and liver-related death has been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the major public health problems worldwide. The development and introduction of highly effective and safe direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) has radically changed the situation. HCV infection is now curable in both adult and pediatric populations. However, the first step in the management of HCV infections is diagnosis, which requires awareness of the problem and available diagnostic tools, e.g., screening strategies and rapid molecular techniques. Those two steps—diagnosis and therapy—are crucial to achieving the goal set by WHO for 2030: to eliminate HCV infection as a public health threat by reducing new HCV infections by 90% and mortality by 65%. Despite tremendous research on HCV vaccine development, there is still a lack of effective specific prophylaxis, which would represent a milestone in HCV elimination.
This Special Issue of Pathogens, titled “Prophylaxis, diagnosis and therapy of hepatitis C virus infection”, includes modern diagnostic methods and techniques, screening recommendations and strategies, therapeutic challenges and problems, and difficulties in vaccine development. The issue welcomes original research articles, as well as reviews and commentaries that address these aspects.
By bringing together research, clinical experience, expert opinions and approaches to management of HCV infection from various countries, this Special Issue will help to shed light on existing barriers and promote efforts to combat HCV.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Pathogens is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
