Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Hypertension is a major cause of cardiovascular complications and associated disability. It develops slowly, insidiously and more often than not without any symptoms. Even though high blood pressure usually takes its toll in middle-aged and older people, its roots are in early life. The implication of this is that we should pay much more attention to the adolescent period during which the hypertensive process begins to develop. Undoubtedly, there are genetic mechanisms involved but we should also take lifestyle-related problems into account. In this respect, dietary habits are of great importance. For years, excess salt intake has been considered as the main, if not the only, villain in this respect but is has become increasingly clear that other nutrients may be of importance as well. In this special issue of Nutrients current knowledge on the nutritional aspects of hypertension in adolescence will be highlighted.
