Effects of Phytochemicals on Gastrointestinal Disorders
This special issue belongs to the section “Phytochemicals and Human Health“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Phytochemicals play a crucial role in modulating gastrointestinal health, primarily through their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These bioactive compounds exert their beneficial effects through multiple pathways, directly and indirectly promoting barrier integrity, microbial homeostasis, and balanced immune activity in the gut.
They are capable of influencing key signaling pathways that are central to the control of oxidative stress and inflammation in conditions such as gastritis, gastric ulcer, inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and gastrointestinal cancer. Furthermore, the complex interplay between dietary phytochemicals and the gut microbiome determines their bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy, either directly or through the production of metabolites.
Growing preclinical and clinical evidence highlights the potential of polyphenols, flavonoids, terpenoids, and other phytochemical classes in alleviating intestinal disorders. However, a deeper understanding of their mechanisms of action, optimal dosing, and long-term impacts is essential for translating these findings into safe and effective nutritional or therapeutic interventions.
This Special Issue invites researchers to contribute original research and comprehensive review articles that explore the multifaceted effects of phytochemicals on gastrointestinal pathophysiology. We welcome studies that elucidate mechanisms, evaluate efficacy in experimental or clinical settings, and investigate interactions with the gastrointestinal ecosystem.
We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions.
Sincerely,
Prof. Dr. Sergio Faloni de Andrade

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
