Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Nutrition plays a pivotal role in the management of kidney transplant recipients, influencing graft function, metabolic outcomes, and long-term patient survival. Poor nutritional status, including both malnutrition and obesity, can increase the risk of postoperative complications and, in some cases, represent a contraindication to transplantation itself. Despite the clinical relevance of dietary management, evidence-based guidelines for post-transplant nutrition remain sparse, and little is known about the long-term dietary trends of kidney transplant recipients.
Onconephrology is an emerging field gaining importance due to the complex interplay between tumorous and renal diseases, with the growing incidence of malignancies in transplant patients requiring preventive strategies and careful monitoring. In this context, tailored nephrological and nutritional management is mandatory, as impaired kidney function may limit the choice of adequate oncological treatments due to potential nephrotoxicity.
This Special Issue aims to bring together current evidence on nutritional strategies for pre-transplant optimization and post-transplant metabolic care, while also exploring the emerging nutritional dimensions of onconephrology, including dietary approaches to mitigate cancer risk and support patients with concurrent renal and oncological disease.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Nutritional assessment and intervention strategies in kidney transplant candidates and recipients.
- Impact of dietary patterns (e.g., Mediterranean diet and low-protein diet) on graft function and long-term outcomes.
- Management of post-transplant metabolic complications (obesity, diabetes, and dyslipidemia) through nutritional approaches.
- Nutritional management in onconephrological patients.
- Novel biomarkers of nutritional status and their clinical applicability in transplant and onconephrological settings.
- Multidisciplinary approaches integrating nephrology, oncology, and clinical nutrition in the management of complex renal patients.
