Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The utilization of prebiotics and probiotics have attracted significant attention over the last decades due to the benefits they confer to human health. Indeed, prebiotic intake has been correlated with functions such as maintenance of body weight, improvement of gut health and immune function and reduction of the incidence of cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes. On the other hand, probiotic intake has been correlated with the prevention and in some cases treatment of dysfunctions of the digestive system and the gut-brain axis, as well as with immune-stimulatory, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and anti-depressant activities. These result from the metabolic activities of the microbial strains and the utilization of appropriate raw materials that may enable the production of bioactive compounds.

The technological and conceptual advances of recent years have enabled a significant increase in data generation and bioinformatic analysis. Through the utilization of next generation sequencing, the metabolic capacity of the analyzed strains may be revealed, facilitating the utilization of the suitable raw materials towards the production of specific metabolic end products. Such an approach may lead to the development of customized products targeting specific needs.

The aim of this special issue is to collect articles that update the current knowledge on the health benefits of prebiotics and probiotics, reveal research gaps and opportunities and point at directions for future studies.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
