Special Issue "Micro/Nanorobots in Medicine"
Deadline for manuscript submissions: 31 October 2020.
Interests: micro/nanorobotics; ultrasound based manipulation; microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip systems
During the past decade, interest in synthetic micro/nanorobotics has increased across various disciplines. The mechanism of propulsion at the microscale, where viscous forces are dominant compared to inertial effects, is distinct from the mechanism at the macroscale. The propulsion of micro/nanorobots is considered to be a fundamental challenge, since the commonly-held design paradigm is the use of nonreciprocal motion to achieve propulsion. Numerous propulsion mechanisms have been developed, but the lack of biocompatibility, low propulsion speed and forces, and poor navigation capabilities have limited their use in bio-applications. Although there is excitement concerning the possibility of using micro/nanorobotics as medical robots for in vivo treatments, research related to their use in biomedical applications has been very limited. This Special Issue will focus on resolving some of the major challenges that currently exist for micro/nanorobotics for their use in medicine.
We welcome original short communications, research, and review articles on the following topics:
- New designs and propulsion strategies of micro/nanorobots;
- New fabrication procedures of micro/nanorobots;
- New strategy of delivering drugs using micro/nanorobots;
- Investigation of biocompatibility of the micro/nanorobotic systems;
- Study of micro/nanorobots in a physiologically relevant environment, for example, when exposed to an external flow or in a complex environment.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Micromachines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
