Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), as a discipline, arose during the early 1990s, and has continued to gather momentum. Terminology has evolved over time, and more current phrasing is “Complementary and Integrative Medicine (CIM)”. Fibromyalgia was recognized as a clinical entity by the American College of Rheumatology in the early 1990s and was reformulated in 2010 to recognize the chronic widespread nature of the pain, symptom severity, and the presence of comorbidities. It is a challenge for patients who endure it and obtain less than optimal outcomes with current medical strategies, for clinicians who treat it, and for societies in terms of medical costs and lost productivity. With the current opioids crisis, there is increasing attention being directed at CAM/CIM for fibromyalgia.

This Special Issue of Medicines will address selected developments in CAM/CIM which show promise of being useful modalities for enhancing management of fibromyalgia. While fibromyalgia is a particular form of chronic pain and diagnosis, it exhibits commonalities with other forms of chronic pain, and advances in this area may well be relevant to other clinical areas.
