Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Food supply chains are currently facing major global challenges, including population growth, decrease in agricultural land, natural resource scarcity, growing impact of climate change and natural disasters, and food shortages and waste problems. These issues threaten various stages of food systems, including supply, production, planning and consumption. A significant amount of the world’s population relies on food imports (especially fresh fruit, vegetables, seafood, etc.), but the recent COVID-19 pandemic has impacted several agricultural activities and food trade policies. Moreover, currently, millions of people lack vital micronutrients and unfortunately face malnutrition. Thus, sustainability implementation is more critical than ever for food supply chains. In particular, the circular economy is reshaping the linear food supply chains to tackle the problems caused by massive food waste and growing pre-packaged food markets.

This issue will blend the existing literature, new methodologies, decision strategies, and future recommendations for adoption of sustainable and circular food systems. This Special Issue solicits articles on, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Circular economy or sustainability implementation in food supply chains;
  • Sustainable supply chain design in food systems;
  • Sustainable consumption and production in food supply chains;
  • Circular economy business models for food systems;
  • Tools and technologies that contribute to the circular capability of food supply chains;
  • Improving food value chain performance;
  • Food waste treatment;
  • Sustainable food packaging;
  • Food supply chain risk and resilience.
