Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Anthropocene is a paradoxical epoch. On one side, technological advances in molecular genetics techniques in taxonomy have permitted the identification of new species or the reclassification of existing ones. On the other side, an unprecedented biodiversity loss is being observed, as a consequence of anthropogenic and environmental disturbances. Global warming, ocean acidification, disease outbreaks, pollution and microplastics are among the contemporary threats to marine biodiversity. Yet, there is increasing evidence that some organisms are adapting to the new conditions of their environment through various adaptation mechanisms. With the sixth mass extinction accelerating, it is essential that we learn and integrate tools, techniques, concepts and theories from different areas fields of marine biology. In this Special Issue we therefore provide a platform to young investigators studying marine life (from tropical coral reefs to polar oceans) to bring together current research and reviews on marine biodiversity and adaptation of marine organisms to contemporary environmental disturbances. We also provide a space to discuss conservation of vulnerable marine organisms with a focus on conservation genetics approaches.

The topics of interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Assessing marine biodiversity from understudied areas.
  2. Describing new species, using latest molecular techniques, or phylogenetic reclassification of marine organisms.
  3. Acclimatization and adaptation of marine organisms to disturbances such as marine heat waves, ocean acidification, pollution and microplastics.
  4. Conservation strategies based on molecular genetics such as human-assisted evolution and use of biomarkers.

This Special Issue is dedicated to researchers at the start of their academic careers, we encourage young researchers in this field to submit their work to this collection. All manuscript will be evaluated with the same rigor as any other manuscript submitted to Life.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Life is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
