Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
A vast portion of secreted proteins is scarcely to heavily decorated with various forms of carbohydrates neatly organized and strategically positioned. Proteins can be glycosylated even if they are not secreted and similar to gate-keepers, glycans can encourage or prevent some interactions. All in all, they can dictate interactions between different macromolecules as they are involved in host-pathogen interaction, cell–cell interaction, cell adhesion, implementation and other numerous biological activities. and it is noted that life habits, sex, age, as well as different physiological and pathological conditions can affect glycosylation pattern of protein, cell or tissue. Glycosylation is not exclusive to proteins as carbohydrates can be enzymatically added also to other types of macromolecules. It is already widely known that glycosylation per se is not genetically encoded. Still, there is genetic information on different enzymes and proteins involved in glycosylation processes, making the field of glycans investigation (i.e., glycomics) more complex and strenuous.
Due to the enormous biological importance of glycans, this issue aims to provide an overview of molecular mechanisms of N- and O- glycosylation, detection of glycans, their deciphering, distribution and alterations in different processes. We encourage the submission of review articles and original papers. Research articles on non-enzymatic glycosylation and advanced glycation end-products are also welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Life is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
