Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

With the rapidly changing demographics, the number of old people worldwide is increasing. Chronic lung diseases as classic diseases of older elderly people are therefore becoming increasingly important. Although many therapies have improved in recent years for many of these disorders, the number of patients with advanced lung disease is increasing. Chronic respiratory failure is the leading symptom of advanced lung disease.

When a chronic respiratory failure occurs, lung transplantation represents the only possible, in the broadest sense, causative therapy. In recent years, however, other methods have emerged in addition to oxygen therapy to compensate for respiratory failure over a long period of time, ranging from various non-invasive ventilation techniques to extracorporeal CO2 removal or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation technology.

Other developments, such as noninvasive or surgical lung volume reduction, attempt to prevent further progression of the disease with the development of chronic respiratory failure in the event of extensive drug therapy.

This Special Issue of the Journal of Clinical Medicine seeks to summarize various aspects of the therapy of advanced lung disease, with special reference to the current state of transplantation medicine.

Thank you for your contribution to this extraordinary project.

Yours
