Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue focuses on the diagnostic and therapeutic advancement of conditions involving the pleural space and lung parenchyma. It emphasizes the role of lung and pleural ultrasound as a superior, real-time monitoring tool compared with routine chest X-ray for guiding clinical decision-making in critically ill patients. The scope includes evaluation of pleural pathology—such as free pleural fluid and pneumothorax—and its impact on respiratory function. It also addresses the limitations of traditional lung recruitment maneuvers in managing atelectasis, particularly the risk of inadequate re-expansion of collapsed lung segments alongside overdistension of healthy lung tissue. Additionally, the scope encompasses minimally invasive chest drainage techniques performed by non-surgical physicians and their potential to reduce the duration of mechanical ventilation and intensive care unit stay.
We welcome submissions that explore various dimensions of pleural and pulmonary diagnostic and therapeutic innovation, including, but not limited to, the following:
- Advances in thoracic ultrasound for the detection, monitoring, and clinical integration of pleural and lung parenchymal pathology.
- Evaluation of respiratory management strategies, including the limitations of traditional lung recruitment maneuvers and the development of more effective, physiologically guided approaches to treating atelectasis.
- Minimally invasive pleural interventions performed by non-surgical physicians, with particular attention to techniques for fluid drainage and pneumothorax management and their impact on outcomes such as duration of mechanical ventilation and length of intensive care stay.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Clinical Medicine is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
