New Insights into Global Cleft Care: Reproducible Solutions for Intractable Challenges

This special issue belongs to the section “Dentistry, Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

As we strive to increase the quality of orofacial cleft treatment on the global stage, the search for ways to provide the full spectrum of care continues. While cheiloplasty, primary rhinoplasty and palatoplasty are commonly performed in all socioeconomic sectors worldwide, many other critical surgical and interdisciplinary elements of orofacial cleft care (dental, orthodontic, speech, nutrition, feeding and psychosocial) remain beyond reach. The barriers to technical implementation are complex and multifactorial. In this Special Issue, readers can expect to find practical solutions to implementing some of the most challenging components of orofacial cleft care. These articles are written by experts who have overcome financial, social, political and environmental barriers to improve the accessibility of complex care to those who need it the most. Topics include pre-surgical infant orthopedics, alveolar bone grafting, orthognathic surgery, sleep apnea, velopharyngeal insufficiency and the use of artificial intelligence, amongst many others. We hope that this Special Issue will foster the expansion of orofacial cleft care programs around the world as we continue to reach further for our patients.
