Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Starch is the main source of calories for humans and is widely used in food, feed, fuel, and industry. Many plant researchers are interested in revealing the mechanism of starch metabolism, raising the efficiency of starch biosynthesis, and improving crop yield and quality. In recent years, based on the mining of multi-omics data and the construction of the mutant library, a large number of genes related to starch biosynthesis and degradation metabolism in plants have been identified, which has potential value for improving crop yield and quality. This Special Issue focuses on recent studies that aimed to improve crops by studying the mechanism of starch metabolism.

The key areas of focus are:

  1. Identification, functional analysis, regulatory mechanism and regulatory network, and evolution of novel genes (proteins) in plant starch biosynthesis and degradation pathway;
  2. Analysis of starch gene-specific variants or mutants;
  3. Structure and properties of starch metabolism enzymes;
  4. Starch granule formation, structure, architecture, physicochemical property, and application.

Meanwhile, research on the exploration and utilization of crop starch-related characteristics for improving essential traits, yield, and sustainability using molecular techniques and multi-omic data analyses will also be considered. Studies providing such information are welcomed and will help to elucidate the molecular mechanism for starch biosynthesis and degradation and promote the improvement of crops.
