Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue of Genealogy will explore the ways in which the meanings of identity, community, and ancestry have taken shape and informed African American life and culture within and across generations. Authors are invited to consider the ways that the history of slavery and the trans-Atlantic slave trade shaped how and why African Americans preserved, adapted, and even created histories, memories, and narratives about their ancestors and ancestry. How did understandings of their ancestry shape African American men and women’s resistance, political engagement, and efforts to pursue freedom, citizenship, and civil rights? Other topics for consideration include examinations of the ways issues such as religious traditions, gender roles, labor patterns, family relations, reproduction, naming practices, artistic skill, and cultural knowledge, to name a few, informed African American women and men’s individual and collective sense of identity, community, and history across time and place.
