Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Machine learning has been extensively applied to problems in pattern recognition, speech synthesis, and outlier detection, however its successful deployment for network operations and management has been limited.

The primary objective of this Special Issue is to provide a comprehensive body of knowledge on ML techniques in support of networking. The submission of research focused on the advances made in the application of ML in networking are welcome. The Special Issue is focused on the proposal and performance evaluation of ML techniques for traffic engineering, performance optimization, and network security.

In traffic engineering, interest is towards the traffic prediction, classification, and routing, which are fundamental in providing differentiated and prioritized services. In performance optimization, there is interest in the application of ML techniques in the context of congestion control, quality of service (QoS)/quality of experience (QoE) correlation, and resource and fault management. The Special Issue will accept manuscripts highlighting existing efforts that use ML techniques for network security.

The submitted contribution should highlight key insights into the ML techniques applied for networking, as well as their benefits, limitations, and feasibility to real-world networking scenarios.

It is important to realize that the focus of the submitted papers is not limited to a specific network technology (e.g., cellular network, wireless sensor network (WSN), mobile ad hoc network (MANET), etc.).

We invite investigators to submit original research articles in which ML solutions for networking are proposed and evaluated, especially for traffic engineering, performance optimization, and network security. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the application of ML techniques in the following networking topics:

  • Traffic prediction
  • Traffic classification
  • Traffic routing
  • Congestion control
  • Resource management
  • Fault management
  • QoS and QoE management
  • Network security
  • Network function virtualization/software defined network architecture

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Future Internet is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
