Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Evidence-based decision making is crucial to policy, planning and sector management for sustainable aquaculture and fisheries development. While many economic techniques and tools (e.g., econometrics, input–output model, social accounting matrix, computable general equilibrium model, system of environmental–economic accounting (SEEA), cost–benefit analysis, multi-criteria decision making (MCDM), bioeconomic model, life cycle assessment/analysis (LCA), value chain analysis, ecosystem services, among others) can be used as decision making aids, their application in policy; planning and sector management for sustainable aquaculture and fisheries development is nevertheless limited by the availability of quality data and the lack of capacity in properly using them. This Special Issue is intended to facilitate exchanges between the policy community and the research community. On one hand, we welcome practitioners to share their experiences in policymaking and sector management, which can be distilled into research topics as feedstock to the research community. On the other hand, we welcome researchers to share their experiences in applying economic analysis and other decision-making aids to facilitate evidence-based policy, planning and sector management, which can provide guidance and tools to the policy community. Potential topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Case studies on issues, methods, good practices, success stories and/or lessons learnt in policy, planning and sector management for sustainable aquaculture and/or fisheries development at the country, regional or global level, including implementation of ecosystem-based management, ecosystem approach to fisheries/aquaculture, food systems approach or other regimes/frameworks/approaches in aquaculture and/or fisheries management.
  • Socioeconomic contribution/impact of the aquaculture and fisheries sector or sub-sectors, including (i) assessment of the socioeconomic impacts of external shocks (e.g., climate change; natural disasters such as floods, tsunamis, red tides, etc.; the COVID-19 pandemic; among others) or policy measures (e.g., public investment in hatcheries; removal of fisheries subsidies; fish health management; among others) based on quantitative methods; (ii) assessment of the socioeconomic contribution/impacts of an aquaculture or fisheries species based on value chain analysis; (iii) evaluation of the ecosystem services of restorative species (e.g. filter feeder finfish, bivalve molluscs or seaweed); (iv) cost–benefit analysis of biodiversity conservation; (v) socioeconomic impacts of fish diseases; among others.
  • Regulatory aspects of evidence-based policy and planning in aquaculture and fisheries development, including case studies on balancing economic, environmental and social dimensions in policy, planning and sector management for sustainable aquaculture and fisheries development.
