Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The science is clear: Global greenhouse gas emissions must be divided in half by 2030 and reach net zero in the middle of the century if the goal of the Paris agreement is to be reached. Nonetheless, most countries shy away from the—estimated or often presumed—costs. The purpose of this Special Issue is to show what decarbonization pathways could look like in terms of social, economic, technical, and political transformation for individual countries or groups of countries. Whenever possible, the implications of these pathways with reference to welfare or the sustainable development goals should be assessed. Contributions could focus on the technical requirements, the needed policies, the acceptability of these transformations, their costs, international cooperation, the transition for specific sectors, the risks for the financial sector, the contribution of negative emissions, etc.
