While the quantity of solar photovoltaic (PV) installations connected to the grid is increasing worldwide, the integration of this large-scale input of solar energy requires the development of new tools that can contribute to an improvement of the safety and stability of electrical network operations. For example, the variability of the solar resource, its unpredictability and its lack of inertia are well-recognised obstacles for the large-scale deployment of photovoltaic power systems to overcome.
Standards are currently being defined which will outline mandatory services that photovoltaic power plants must provide, such as voltage and reactive power support, frequency support or ramping limitations. In the near future, these standards are expected to include new services such as power oscillation damping, fast frequency response, inertia emulation or black start capability. Additionally, power reserves are required, which necessitates systemic developments capable of predicting and estimating available power, or installing storage technologies to form hybrid photovoltaic storage power plants.
This Special Issue focuses on the integration of photovoltaic power installations into the grid. We invite you to contribute to this Special Issue, which includes (but is not limited to) the following topics:
- Improvement of current control methods in photovoltaic power plants;
- New grid support services and solutions for photovoltaic power plants;
- Available power forecast in photovoltaic power installations;
- Real-time available power estimation in photovoltaic power installations;
- Energy storage integration in photovoltaic power plants, including:
- Power reserve for the grid support service,
- Market-oriented services,
- Location of energy storage systems within photovoltaic power plants,
- Other aspects relevant to improving the grid integration of solar photovoltaic energy will also be considered.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
