Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Along with the effort to push the boundaries of optical and electronic devices' performance, reducing their power consumption has also surfaced as an imminent task. Thus, demand has never been higher for energy-efficient electronic devices and low power consumption devices with a novel working mechanism.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials, owing to the capability to reduce the device dimension dramatically, offers an important opportunity to achieve power-efficient devices. Moreover, the range of 2D materials spans a wide variety of families, including metallic graphene, semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and phosphorene, and wide bandgap insulator hBN. Also, being able to employ spin-polarization, ferromagnetic, ferroelectric state, and thermoelectricity allows the 2D material family a suitable candidate for novel devices. Most importantly, the atomically thin structure introduced a degree of freedom to build heterostructure from different 2D species and promote unique properties.

In such a context, this special issue focuses on exploring the possibility of advanced 2D materials for novel energy-efficient electronic device applications. Experimental, theoretical, or combined works reporting impactful findings toward energy efficiency by device engineering, reporting novel functionality, or providing a fundamental understanding of physics, are all welcomed.

Energies is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
