Topical Collection Information

Dear Colleagues,

Certain materials produce electric charges on their surfaces upon the application of mechanical stress. The induced charges are proportional to the exerted mechanical stress. This is called direct piezoelectric effect and was discovered in quartz by Pierre and Jacques Curie in 1880. Materials showing this phenomenon also conversely present a geometric strain proportional to an applied electric field. This is the converse piezoelectric effect, discovered by Gabriel Lippmann in 1881.

The first application of piezoelectric materials was demonstrated in underwater SONARs by Langevin. Regarding their recent industrial commercialization, we can point out at least the following million-selling products in the last 20 years:

  • Inkjet printer (piezoelectric) by Epson.
  • Diesel injection valve (multilayer) by Siemens, Bosch, Denso (Peugeot, Toyota).
  • Camera module for mobile phones (micro ultrasonic motor) by Samsung Electromechanics (Galaxy series).
  • Backlight inverter (piezoelectric transformer) for laptop computers by Apple (17” MacBook).
  • Piezoelectric energy-harvesting device for Programable Air-Burst Munition by Micromechatronics Inc. (US Army).

The motivations for compiling a new “Encyclopedia of Piezoelectrics” are as follows:

  • New technologies, product developments, and commercialization are providing further products’ requirements, such as for piezoelectric actuators.
  • The progress in high-power transducers, loss mechanisms in smart materials, energy harvesting, and computer simulations is significant and should be revised drastically.
  • Research data about piezoelectric energy harvesting have been accumulating in the last years.

The new Encyclopedia will present  a theoretical description of the fundamental aspects of piezoelectricity, an overview of actual materials, device designs, drive/control techniques, and typical applications, as well as current and future research trends in the field of micromechatronics. The Encyclopedia will not be a collection of case studies.
