Topical Collection Information

Dear Colleagues,

Biomaterials have emerged as a cornerstone of modern medicine, driving innovation across prevention, diagnosis, therapy, and regenerative healthcare. Advances in materials science, chemistry, and bioengineering now enable the design of biomaterials with highly controlled physicochemical and biological properties. Far beyond their early role as passive substitutes, contemporary biomaterials actively modulate biological processes, promote repair, and restore function, thereby reshaping therapeutic possibilities.

This Topical Collection, “Applications of Biomaterials in Medicine”, provides a focused platform for publishing studies that demonstrate the potential and versatility of biomaterials in medical practice. We welcome contributions spanning, but not limited to, the following:

  • Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine
  • Drug and gene delivery systems
  • Medical implants and prosthetics
  • Wound healing and tissue repair
  • Biosensors and diagnostic platforms
  • Patient-specific and personalized therapeutic approaches

Priority will be given to interdisciplinary studies that integrate fundamental science with translational or clinical perspectives. Manuscripts should aim to advance understanding of biomaterial performance, biocompatibility, safety, and long-term functionality, while also addressing current challenges and unmet clinical needs.

We invite researchers to contribute entries and comprehensive reviews that critically assess emerging trends and propose future directions. By consolidating diverse insights, this Topical Collection seeks to foster dialogue across disciplines, accelerate the translation of laboratory innovations into clinical applications, and highlight the transformative role of biomaterials in improving patient outcomes.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the collection website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Encyclopedia is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1000 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
