Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In recent years, thanks to the spread of innovative technologies from the fourth industrial revolution (the so-called “Industry 4.0”), the topic of maintenance and safety management in industrial contexts has advanced [1]. This is confirmed by the growing number of conferences, journal publications, special issues, and websites dedicated to the topic.
Several smart applications have been implemented to support maintenance and safety tasks, facilitating procedures without interfering with operations [2]. The digital transformation of factories embraces the adoption of innovative technologies, in line with the paradigms of connectivity and human–machine interaction by sending–receiving and sharing data and information useful to execute manufacturing tasks [3]. Smart technologies open a wide range of opportunities for defect diagnosis and assistance enhancement in various sectors. In manufacturing, the upgrade to the industry 4.0 technologies will contribute to improving the conditions of the workplace as well as simplify maintenance and safety activities.
Among the enabling technologies available in Industry 4.0, augmented and virtual reality, the Internet of Things, and the use of big data have been identified as the most promising ones [4]. Augmented and virtual reality have had several applications in the last decade, showing good potential in solving industrial issues [5].
The objectives of this Special Issue are to provide a snapshot of the status, potential, challenges, and recent developments of digital manufacturing in maintenance and safety management and to open a discussion for new ideas.
We invite researchers to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that will further stimulate the continuing efforts to improve the current investigations within the field.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
