Gynecological Cancer Awareness, August 2026
As part of our continued efforts to support impactful cancer research and foster scientific dialogue, MDPI is spotlighting gynecological cancer, a diverse group of malignancies affecting the female reproductive system, including the ovaries, uterus, cervix, and more. These cancers encompass a range of distinct diseases with varying biological characteristics, risk factors, and treatment approaches. Despite advances in screening, diagnosis, and therapy, gynecological cancers continue to present significant challenges in clinical management and patient care.
Gynecological cancers can affect individuals across different stages of life, with incidence and risk factors varying by cancer type. Cervical cancer, for example, is strongly associated with persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV), while endometrial cancer is more commonly diagnosed after menopause. Ovarian cancer remains particularly challenging due to its vague early symptoms and the lack of effective population-wide screening methods. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 21,010 new cases of ovarian cancer, 13,490 new cases of cervical cancer, and 68,270 new cases of uterine cancer are expected to be diagnosed in the United States in 2026, highlighting the continued need for advances in prevention, early detection, and treatment.
By bringing together cutting-edge research and creating various focused Special Issues, MDPI journals aim to continue to facilitate knowledge exchange and highlight emerging advances in the field of gynecological oncology. These efforts play an important role in advancing innovation, improving early detection and therapeutic strategies, and ultimately enhancing outcomes for patients worldwide.
