To explore the corrosion of Q235 steel in sand containing a simulated haze aqueous solution (HA solution) under a natural air-dried state, the effect of moisture (age) on the corrosion of Q235 steel in sand was comprehensively studied by EIS, polarization curve, SEM, EDS and XPS. The physical and chemical properties of the sand showed that the sand containing the HA solution was basically neutral under natural air drying, and the temperature was around 20 °C. After 14 days, the moisture content gradually decreased from 30% to 0%, and the salinity decreased from 1.26% to 0.04%. With the increase in age, the E_ocp gradually positively skews, indicating the corrosion kinetics of the Q235 steel decrease. The impedance spectra showed that in the frequency of 10⁻²–10³ Hz, the impedance spectra exhibited a flat capacitive loop, and the corrosion of Q235 steel was the strongest in the sand containing HA solution on the 8 d. The polarization curves showed that with increasing age, the degree of corrosion of Q235 steel changed from medium or above to slight corrosion in the sand containing HA solution. The pitting characteristics of anode branch for polarization curve also indicate the faster corrosion kinetics of Q235 steel in the early age (1–5 d). The corrosion current density I_o first increased and then decreased, and the highest value was 3.44 × 10⁻⁵ A/cm² at 6 d. The average corrosion rate was 0.1629 mm/a. HA solution accelerates the corrosion of Q235 steel in sand without HA solution (average corrosion rate, 1.51 × 10⁻² mm/a). A large amount of brown-yellow corrosion products (iron oxides, about 70–200 μm) presented on the surface of the Q235 steel. The corrosion of Q235 steel belonged to local corrosion, and the corrosion pits were connected to form a large dimple-like area. The HA solution and the porous structure of sand jointly affect the electrochemical corrosion of Q235 steel. Full article

Wood, one of the materials predominantly employed in construction, possesses various advantageous properties alongside certain drawbacks, such as susceptibility to thermal degradation. To enhance wood fire resistance, one approach involves the application of flame retardants. This study compared the fire-retardant effectiveness of expandable graphite, bonded with water glass, as a coating for spruce wood against commercially available fire-retardant treatments. Spruce wood samples (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst) underwent treatment with three distinct retardants: expandable graphite in combination with water glass, Bochemit Antiflash, and Bochemit Pyro. The fire-technical characteristics of the samples were examined by a non-standard test method—a test with a radiant heat source. The experiment evaluated the fire-retardant properties by recording changes in sample mass, burning rate, and temperature difference. The best results among all flame retardants were achieved by expandable graphite in combination with water glass, in all evaluation criteria. Among all the flame retardants used, expandable graphite in combination with water glass achieved the best results in all evaluation criteria. Full article

In order to infer the load on the component after the experimental uniaxial tensile fracture inversion model based on cross-sectional reconstruction, (FRASTA) was proposed to infer the load on the tested components. This model can combine the fracture surface characteristics of experimental specimens to reconstruct the fracture surface morphology and invert the fracture process of uniaxial tensile specimens. Based on the assumption of rectangular rod fracture, a quantitative inversion model for a unidirectional stress load based on dissipative plasticity characteristics was established, and the inversion results based on cross-sectional reconstruction were compared with the experimental measurement results. The results indicate that when only considering the unidirectional stress state, the two have a high degree of consistency, with a maximum measurement error of 5.3%, fully verifying the accuracy of the fracture surface reconstruction and inversion model. Waterborne epoxy resin (WEP) coatings are widely used in various fields due to their environmentally friendly properties, yet their corrosion resistance and shielding properties demand further refinement. In this work, melamine-modified graphene oxide (MGO) was synthesized using surface covalent functionalization, and a novel waterborne epoxy/modified graphene oxide coating (WEP/MGO) was prepared. The optimal modification effect was obtained by exploring different proportions of melamine, which led to significant improvements in the corrosion resistance of WEP. Furthermore, the corrosion protection efficiency of WEP/MGO coatings was systematically evaluated by examining the impact of different additions of MGO. The impedance modulus at the lowest frequency was increased from 3.77 × 10⁸ Ω·cm² of WEP to 2.85 × 10⁹ Ω·cm² after immersion in 3.5% NaCl for 48 h, when the addition of MGO was 0.1 wt.%. And the corrosion expansion at both the scratch and corrosion spot frequencies of the WEP-coated samples displayed a remarkable attenuation following exposure to salt spray for 300 h. In this study, ZrBSiTa and (ZrBSiTa)N_x films were deposited on silicon wafers through direct current magnetron cosputtering. The nitrogen flow ratio (R_N2) of the reactive gas and the sputter power applied to the Si target (P_Si) were the variables in the fabricating processes. The influence of the N and Si contents on the mechanical properties, thermal stability, and oxidation behavior of the ZrBSiTa and (ZrBSiTa)N_x films were investigated. All the as-fabricated films exhibited amorphous structures. The R_N2 set at 0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 caused the ZrBSiTaN_x films to exhibit high N contents of 52–55, 62–64, and 63–64 at.%, respectively. The Si content of the ZrBSiTa films increased from 0 to 42 at.% as P_Si increased from 0 to 150 W, and this was accompanied by decreases in hardness and Young’s modulus values from 19.1 to 14.3 GPa and 264 to 242 GPa, respectively. In contrast, the increase in Si content of the (ZrBSiTa)N_x films from 0 to 21 at.% increased the hardness from 11.5 to 14.0 GPa, and Young’s modulus from 207 to 218 GPa. Amorphous BN and SiN_x phases in the (ZrBSiTa)N_x films varied the structural and mechanical properties. The thermal stability of the (ZrBSiTa)N_x films was evaluated by annealing at 800–900 °C for 10–30 min in Ar. The oxidation behavior of the (ZrBSiTa)N_x films was evaluated in the ambient air at 800 °C for 0.5–24 h. The amorphous (ZrBSiTa)N_x films with a high Si content had high thermal stability and oxidation resistance. Full article

CrAlN and CrAlBN coatings were prepared on the surface of high-speed steel and shaper cutter by physical vapor deposition (PVD) technique using arc ion source. In the process of coating preparation, the adhesive layers were deposited by low bias voltage (−40 V) and the working layers are deposited by high bias voltage (−130 V). The effects of the addition of B element on the microstructure, hardness, elastic modulus and wear resistance of CrAlBN coating were studied. The results show that B element and its compounds exist in amorphous form in the coating, resulting in lattice distortion of the coating, increase of coating hardness to 37.1 GPa, and decrease of elastic modulus to 406.2 GPa. The addition of B element increases the uniformity of the columnar structure distribution and decreases the width of the columnar structure and grain size. The resistance to elastic deformation and plastic deformation of CrAlBN coating is improved, the wear resistance is improved. The performance of CrAlN and CrAlBN coatings on shaper cutter was studied. It was found that the main failure mode of shaper cutters is boundary wear and the wear mechanism of coatings had changed obviously. CrAlBN coating is mainly due to fatigue induced failure, accompanied by some diffusion wear. The addition of B element makes the CrAlBN coating have excellent resistance to oxidative wear, abrasive wear and diffusion wear during cutting. The results show that the addition of B element can improve the microstructure and mechanical properties of CrAlN coating, and the preparation of CrAlBN coating on the surface of the shaper cutter can significantly improve the service life of the coated shaper cutter, which has significance for the development of the shaper cutter industry. This study explores the self-healing phenomenon at the cut edges of Zn-Al-Mg alloy coated steel in chloride environments, a critical consideration for materials exposed to marine conditions. Zn-Al-Mg coatings offer superior resistance to cut-edge corrosion. This research aims to unravel the self-healing properties observed in these coatings. Through cyclic corrosion tests (CCTs), we compared the corrosion resistance of Zn-Al-Mg coated steel with traditional zinc alloy coatings. Our findings show a notable reduction in corrosion with ZMA4 coatings after 120 CCT cycles. This is due to the formation of corrosion products, namely layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and Mg(OH)₂. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses were employed to confirm the presence of these products and elucidate their roles in the self-healing process. This study highlights the potential of Zn-Al-Mg coatings for enhancing the durability of steel structures in corrosive environments, suggesting a paradigm shift in corrosion protection strategies for marine applications. The development of coatings that exhibit self-healing capabilities in chloride-rich environments could significantly mitigate the challenges posed by cut-edge corrosion, promising extended service life and reduced maintenance costs. The surface of 17-4PH martensitic stainless steel was laser-cladded with Ni60 and Ni60+nano-WC composites and a comprehensive investigation was conducted of the microstructure and wear mechanism. The findings demonstrate that despite the added nano-WC particles being fused and dissolved during laser cladding, they still lead to a reduction in grain size and a decrease in crystallographic orientation strength. Furthermore, the dissolution of nano-WC makes the lamellar M₂₃C₆ carbides transform into a rod or block morphology, and leads to the CrB borides becoming finer and more evenly dispersed. This microstructural evolution resulted in a uniform increase in hardness and wear resistance, effectively preventing crack formation. When the nano-WC addition increased to 20 wt.%, there was a 27.12% increase in microhardness and an 85.19% decrease in volume wear rate compared to that of the pure Ni60 coating. Through analysis of the microstructure and topography of wear traces, it can be inferred that as the nano-WC addition increased from 0 wt.% up to 20 wt.%, there was a gradual transition from two-body abrasive wear to three-body abrasive wear, ultimately resulting in adherent wear. Acrylic polymers were extensively used in past restoration practices, usually as consolidants or protecting agents. Their removal is often required because polymer coatings can improve some decay processes of stone substrates and, after ageing, may generate undesirable materials on the surface of artifacts. Therefore, the removal of old polymer coating from the surface of artifacts has become a common operation in the conservation of cultural heritage. As with other cleaning operations, it is a delicate process that may irreversibly damage the artifacts if not correctly carried out. The main aim of this study was to determine the appropriate cleaning procedure for efficiently removing old acrylic polymers (e.g., Paraloid B-72) from the surface of historical buildings. For this purpose, a polymer was applied to two different porous stone substrates (bio-calcarenite and arenaria stone). The hydrogel cleaning approach was used for the present study, as preliminary results suggested that it is the most promising polymer-removing method. The considered hydrogel (based on a semi-interpenetrating polymer network involving poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and polyvinylpyrrolidone) was prepared and characterized using different techniques in order to assess the gel’s properties, including the gel content, equilibrium water content, retention capability, hardness, Young’s modulus, and morphology. After that, the hydrogel was loaded with appropriate amounts of nano-structured emulsions (NSEs) containing a surfactant (EcoSuf^TM), organic solvents, and H₂O, then applied onto the coated surfaces. Moreover, plain EcoSurf^TM in a water emulsion (EcoSurf/H₂O) was also used to understand the polymer-removing behavior of the surfactant without any organic solvent. A comparative study was carried out on artificially aged and unaged polymer-coated samples to better understand the cleaning effectiveness of the considered emulsions for removing decayed polymer coatings. The experimental results showed that the NSE-loaded hydrogel cleaning method was more effective than other common cleaning procedures (e.g., cellulose pulp method). In fact, only one cleaning step was enough to remove the polymeric material from the stone surfaces without affecting their original properties. Full article

Femtosecond laser processing technology is an advanced sub-micro-processing technique that enables the non-contact processing of various materials. This technology can be used to apply sub-micro structures for purposes such as hydrophilicity enhancement, optical transmittance improvement, and photonics detection. However, when it comes to processing micro/nanostructures on highly brittle materials using femtosecond lasers, there are challenges such as low processing efficiency, generation of debris, and microcracking. In this paper, we propose a method called the out-of-focus femtosecond laser direct writing technique combined with wet etching. This method offers simplicity, speed, and flexibility in preparing dense, large-area sub-microstructured surfaces on the brittle material sapphire. Our detailed investigation focuses on the impact of laser processing parameters (direct writing period, distance of focusing, direct writing speed, etc.) on the sub-microstructures of Al₂O₃ surfaces. The results demonstrate that this method successfully creates embedded sub-microstructures on the sapphire surface. The microholes, with a diameter of approximately 2.0 μm, contain sub-micro structures with a minimum width of 250 ± 20 nm. Additionally, we conducted experiments to assess the optical transmittance of sapphire nanostructures in the range of 350–1200 nm, which exhibited an average transmittance of approximately 77.0%. The water contact angle (CA) test yielded a result of 52 ± 2°, indicating an enhancement in the hydrophilicity of the sapphire nanostructures with only a slight reduction in optical transmittance. Our efficient fabrication of sub-microstructures on the sapphire surface of highly brittle materials offers a promising method for the production and application of brittle materials in the field of micro-optics. To investigate the effect of ZrC on the ablative properties of C/SiC composites in a high-temperature environment, the oxidative ablation of C/SiC and C/SiC-ZrC composites at high-temperatures was examined through ablation tests. In this study, two ceramic matrix composites, C/SiC and C/SiC-ZrC, were prepared by chemical vapor deposition and precursor impregnation cracking. The ablation properties of the materials were tested and analyzed using an oxyacetylene flame to simulate a high-temperature environment. The results revealed that the line ablation rate of C/SiC-ZrC was 8.48% and 20.81% lower than that of C/SiC at 30 s and 60 s, respectively. At the same ablation time, the depth of the crater resulting from erosion of the C/SiC material by the high-temperature airflow was deeper than that of C/SiC-ZrC. The traces of the fibers subjected to erosion were more prominent. In a longitudinal comparison, the mass ablation rate of C/SiC-ZrC material decreased with the increase in time, while the line ablation rate initially increased rapidly and then decreased. From 30 s to 90 s of ablation, the line ablation rate and mass ablation rate decreased by 55.62% and 89.5%, respectively. The overall trend for both rates was a decrease with the increase in time. Under the same ablation time, the ablation rate of C/SiC-ZrC was generally lower than that of C/SiC. This is because the generated molten ZrO₂ was more viscous and denser than SiO₂, effectively blocking oxidizing gases from penetrating the interior of the material. The molten ZrO₂ provided better protection for the substrate in the high-temperature environment. Full article

This work presents the densification of Co-based alloy powders by a spark plasma sintering process. The densification process was carried out at a temperature range of 800 °C to 1100 °C in order to obtain sintered coupons and study their microstructure and mechanical properties. The shrinkage behaviour of the sintered coupons was studied, and an optimal densification temperature was defined. The microstructural analysis showed a reduction in porosity with temperature increment along with the development of a fine microstructure comprised of cobalt-molybdenum-chromium-silicon-based intermetallic laves phases, which are dispersed in a softer cobalt-based alloy matrix. X-diffraction analysis showed that these crystalline phases were well-dispersed, with a lattice parameter corresponding to a hexagonal system. The obtained high Vickers hardness values were attributed to the preservation of a fine microstructure and to the precipitation of Co-Mo phases. Three-point bending tests were performed in order to identify the strain path concerning the densification of the sintered coupons. Full article

We propose a simple multifunctional terahertz absorber based on the simulation. The device consists of a gold layer, a SiO₂ dielectric layer, and a VO₂ top layer. The modulation mechanism of this device is to utilize the thermally induced phase transition characteristics of vanadium dioxide material. The simulation results show that when the temperature is 312 K, the device has the effect of complete reflection of terahertz waves. When the temperature is 345 K, the device has almost perfect absorption of terahertz wave in the range of 4.7–9.7 THz, and the spectral absorptivity is modulated in the range of 0~0.999. The electric field conditions at different temperatures were plotted to further explain the reasons for the performance transition of the device. The terahertz device was explained using impedance matching theory. In addition, the influence of different structural parameters on absorption rate was studied, providing reference for practical applications. At the same time, the device is polarization-insensitive and insensitive to the incident angle. When the incident angle changes from 0°to 45°, the device still has a stable absorption effect. The device has great application prospects in terahertz stealth, modulation, and other fields and provides ideas for the design of related devices. Full article

A major strategy to combat implant-associated infections is to develop implant coatings with intrinsic antibacterial activity. Since hydroxyapatite (HAp) coatings and antibiotic administration are commonly used in clinical settings, developing HAp-coated implants with localized antibiotic-releasing properties has attracted popularity. Considering the antibacterial metal species (Ag, Zn, Cu, etc.) in metal–organic frameworks and their drug delivery capacity, in this study, a gentamicin-loaded zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanolayer was deposited on a plasma-sprayed HAp coating (HAp/ZIF-8@Gent), which served as a Gent and Zn²⁺ reservoir. The investigation on the binding interaction between ZIF-8 and HAp indicated that the growth of ZIF-8 was through a Zn²⁺ seed layer on the HAp coating via an adsorption–replacement mechanism, instead of simple physical adsorption. The HAp/ZIF-8@Gent coating exhibited a sustained drug-release property, and the cumulative concentration of released Gent reached 239.8 ± 7.1 μg/mL on day 8. Compared to the HAp-Zn and HAp/ZIF-8 coatings, the HAp/ZIF-8@Gent coating exhibited significantly higher antibacterial activity against E. coli. This was ascribed to the combined antibacterial effects of Zn²⁺ and Gent. The cytocompatibility of the HAp/ZIF-8@Gent coating was confirmed via cell proliferation. Above all, the ZIF-8-modified HAp coating with localized delivery of Gent and Zn²⁺ possessed excellent antibacterial activity and acceptable cytocompatibility, showing potential in mitigating implant-associated infections. Multiple advantages, such as good formability, high specific strength, excellent thermal conductivity, and high corrosion resistance, enable aluminum alloy wide application in various fields; however, low surface hardness and poor wear resistance limit its further development. In this study, three surface modification coatings were successfully prepared on the surface of 7A04 aluminum alloy by microarc oxidation (MAO) and a combination of hard anodizing treatment (HA) and physical vapor deposition (PVD), named MAO, HA+W+DLC, and HA+Ti+ta-C, respectively. The microstructure, hardness, and tribological properties of the three coatings and the 7A04 aluminum alloy substrate were studied. The results show that the surface quality and hardness of the coated samples were higher than those of the 7A04 aluminum alloy and that the HA+Ti+ta-C coating possessed the highest hardness of 34.23 GPa. Moreover, the wear resistance of the two multilayer coatings was significantly improved during the ring-block wear tests under oil lubrication, exhibiting a wear rate of 1.51 × 10⁻⁷ mm³/N·m for HA+W+DLC and 1.36 × 10⁻⁷ mm³/N·m for HA+Ti+ta-C. Results of XRD and TEM studies of a metastable phase state in Fe₇₃Ti₅B₁₉O₃ and Fe₅₅Ti₁₆B₂₇O₂ films, which is formed upon magnetron deposition under preset conditions, and of the evolution of the state in the course of subsequent annealing at 500 °C for 1, 5, and 9 h and experimental data on the magnetic microstructure and magnetic properties are reported. The annealed films were found to be characterized by a nanocrystalline structure, which is represented by two crystalline phases, namely, the ferromagnetic solid solution αFe(Ti), and nonferromagnetic boride Fe_nB. The Ti content in the films determines the grain size of the αFe(Ti) phase, whereas the content of B localized within the grain boundaries determines the ratio of the volume fractions of amorphous and nanocrystalline phases in the structure. In contrast to the ferromagnetic Fe₇₃Ti₅B₁₉O₃ films, the Fe₅₅Ti₁₆B₂₇O₂ films are superparamagnets both in the deposited state and after annealing at 500 °C for 1 and 5 h because of the higher volume fraction of the amorphous phase in the structure. The 9 h annealing of the Fe₅₅Ti₁₆B₂₇O₂ films transfers them into the ferromagnets owing to the development of the amorphous phase crystallization, increase in the content of nanocrystalline ferromagnetic phase αFe(Ti) grains, and realization of exchange interaction between them. The effective detection of delamination defects, especially sub-millimeter delamination defects, in metal-clad plates is of great significance in improving product quality. In this work, the laser ultrasonic (LU) local resonance method is used to locate and characterize the sub-millimeter defects in stainless/carbon steel-clad plates. The influence of the delamination radius on the amplitude and resonant frequency of the laser ultrasound was investigated using 2D axisymmetric finite element (FE) simulations. The simulation results show that both the amplitude and the first resonance frequency (FRF) are effective features for detecting large-scale delamination defects, but the FRF is a better feature for detecting tiny delamination defects. A 304/Q235/304-clad plate specimen was made through a hot rolling bonding process, which contained a large number of self-forming delamination defects. The laser ultrasonic signals of different composite states collected in the experiment have good consistency with the simulated waveforms. The experimental results show that the laser ultrasonic local resonance method is a high-resolution imaging method, which can locate and characterize the sub-millimeter delamination defects in stainless/carbon steel-clad plates. Hard alloy end mills are commonly employed for milling zirconia prostheses in dentistry. Nano-diamond-coated milling bits ensure high processing efficiency, accuracy, extended tool life, and reduced processing costs. This study aims at comparing various effects of cutting dental zirconia with nano-diamond-coated and ordinary milling bits. Two types of milling bits, one with nano-diamond coating and one without, were used to cut the dental zirconia green blanks (Ø98.5 mm, thickness: 25 mm) at three different speeds (1000, 1500, and 2000 rpm) in a dental milling machine. The unsintered and sintered zirconia surfaces were evaluated with glossmeter, optical profilometer for surface roughness, SEM, and EDX. The glossiness of the sintered zirconia block was statistically higher than that of the unsintered block (p < 0.05). For sintered zirconia, the nano-diamond-coated milling bit yielded a statistically (p < 0.05) higher glossiness in all spindle speeds than uncoated, save for the uncoated milling bit used at 1500 rpm. However, in terms of roughness, only sintering showed to be a statistically significant factor (p < 0.001) outweighing other two factors, and sintered zirconia always yielded lower surface roughness than the unsintered counterpart. Overall, the nano-diamond-coated milling bit can be operated at various speeds, resulting in a higher gloss on the sintered zirconia block, while an ordinary, uncoated milling bit can only achieve the same glossiness at a designated speed. The type of milling bits and the speeds have no significant effect on the surface roughness. Full article
