Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Most surfaces immersed in a biological medium are colonised by various types of cells as prokaryotes and eukaryotes. In natural environments, the development of bacterial and microalgae biofilms is called microfouling. This phenomenon occurs in an extremely wide range of situations, such as medical devices, pipelines, ship hulls, aquaculture or agrofood. The development of biofilms starts with cells adhesion to the surface. This phenomenon is caused by interactions between materials and biological cells. This process causes severe problems in various domains (nosocomial diseases, loss of functionality of medical instruments, reduction of vessels performance, frictional resistance, high maintenance costs). Therefore, the control of cell adhesion to substrates remains a challenge. Actually, two main strategies based on the use of polymeric material are used. The first one concerns the use of biocidal compounds. Their mode of action is based on a toxic effect. Nevertheless, the recent regulation concerning the use of biocides (EU Regulation No 528/2012) restricts their industrial development and implies the use of authorized biocides in every activity area. The second one implies the use of a polymeric surface for which the surface properties are not suitable for cell–surface interactions.

This Special Issue welcomes original research articles with a focus on the polymeric surfaces controlling bioadhesion mainly for marine and medical applications. Furthermore, review papers featuring processes in related areas are also welcomed.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Fouling-release coatings;
  • Amphiphilic surfaces;
  • Textured surfaces;
  • Nontoxic antifouling surfaces;
  • Responsive surfaces;
  • Biomimetic surfaces;
  • Zwitterionic polymers.
