Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Abusive head trauma (AHT) is one of the most challenging diagnoses in pediatrics. The diagnosis is based on history, physical examination, imaging, and laboratory findings. Whether in the clinical or in the post mortem setting, diagnosing AHT is always a multidisciplinary task with great significance for both child protection and possible legal consequences.

Over the last decade, a growing body of knowledge on this topic, including the publication of a consensus statement supported by leading medical societies from all over the world, has fortunately been observed. However, there have also been numerous discussions questioning the concept of AHT or single aspects of it. Yet, it must be emphasized that there is no controversy as to the medical validity of the existence of AHT, even though the courtroom can still become a forum for unsubstantiated theories.

This Special Issue aims to provide an update on the current knowledge, and to highlight the latest advances and newest insights into AHT. I hope that this Special Issue will be of interest not only for pediatricians, pediatric radiologists, and forensic physicians, but also for all the other subspecialists involved in diagnosing AHT as well as for legal experts.

I look forward to your contributions.
