Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
I am delighted to announce a Special Issue of Children, entitled “Advances in Pediatric Emergency Medicine”.
Pediatric visits to the emergency department (ED) occur for a wide range of reasons—from simple trauma to complex catastrophic illness. Large population studies show that approximately one in seven children will visit the ED annually, with an estimated 30% of these children having multiple ED visits. Approximately 30 million children in the United States alone visit EDs annually, accounting for ~20% of total ED volumes, yet only an estimated 45% of EDs have the pediatric-specific staff, training, equipment, and policies to accommodate the wide range of ages and presenting complaints. This is a concerning gap given children’s unique health needs and the diversity of potential presenting conditions and socioeconomic resources.
Children of all ages face serious stressors when receiving emergency care, and require a skillful approach to minimize fear, pain, stress, and unnecessary trauma. As the field of pediatric emergency medicine has evolved, significant opportunity for learning, refinement of therapies, and improvements in care exist. The purpose of this Special Issue is to explore a variety of facets of pediatric emergency care and treatment to highlight key advances, developing needs, policy challenges, case studies, national and international trends, and more.
We invite investigators to contribute original research articles, as well as review articles, that will stimulate the continuing efforts to improve our understanding in this challenging field. As the title implies, we encourage articles that describe new developments or that provide unconventional or inspirational contributions.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.
