Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue explores the comprehensive scope of pediatric nutrition, spanning from early infancy through late adolescence. It emphasizes the critical integration of rigorous nutritional assessment techniques with evidence-based interventions and diverse supplementation strategies. By addressing both macro- and micronutrient requirements, this collection aims to highlight how tailored nutritional support can mitigate developmental risks, manage chronic pediatric conditions and optimize long-term health outcomes for both clinical cases and the healthy pediatric population. Central to this discussion is the role of precise assessment—utilizing anthropometric, biochemical and dietary tools—to guide effective interventions in the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity and the management of malnutrition.
Furthermore, the issue recognizes that over the last few decades, the use of nutritional supplements and over-the-counter products for infants and children has significantly increased. Beyond standard micronutrient supplementation with multivitamins and minerals, the use of macronutrients like omega-3 fatty acids has become increasingly prominent. Driven by parental aims to "boost metabolism" or enhance immunity, products such as probiotics, essential oils (e.g., echinacea) and beta-glucans are now frequently utilized in the healthy population. In sick infants and children, this use is even more diverse, where Oral Nutritional Supplements serve as a vital tool for comprehensive nutritional support. By bringing together research on assessment, dietary management and supplementation, this Special Issue seeks to increase the knowledge required for the justified and targeted use of these interventions to support growth, cognitive function and overall wellbeing. We look forward to receiving your contributions and welcome original research articles, review articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and case reports focusing on any aspect of nutritional assessment, intervention, or supplementation in healthy or sick infants and children.
