Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great pleasure that I announce this Special Issue of Behavioral Sciences, which focuses on Place Attachment—one of the most compelling phenomena of our time. Place attachments are the emotional bonds between people and place that inform our sense of identity, create meaning in our lives, facilitate community, and influence action. Such attachments are at the root of many of the most pressing issues of our time, as we witness unprecedented environmental and community changes. Responding to such changes requires insight into the ways that people bond to a place and derive meaning from their lived experiences of a place. This is particularly important among vulnerable populations who are continually threatened with displacement the world over—whether from urbanization and gentrification processes, environmental degradation and global climate change, or migration/immigration patterns.

This Special Issue will draw together the state-of-the-art in theory and research on people’s emotional relationships with places in their lives. We welcome theoretical and empirical papers that consider place attachments from a range of disciplines, including psychology, sociology, geography, anthropology, urban planning, urban studies, and social work.
