Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Built environments, for the most part, can have a significant negative impact both on the environment as a whole, as well as on the health and wellbeing of building users and the public at large. While considerable improvements have been made in understanding, measuring, and reducing the negative environmental and health impacts of the built environment, much work is still needed if we are to achieve the goals of completely eliminating those negative impacts and designing regenerative and healthy buildings and communities. Achieving these goals requires an integrated and collaborative approach in which all built environment disciplines can contribute effectively.

This Special Issue aims to explore the role architects and architectural design play in mitigating or eliminating the negative environmental and health impacts of the built environment, and in designing high-performance and healthy building and communities. We invite authors to submit original articles that explore the broader issues from different theoretical, methodological, and regional perspectives. Possible topics may include the design process, the role of technology, performance assessment, post-occupancy evaluation, performance rating systems, the role of architectural research, and interdisciplinary collaboration, among others. Articles focusing on the design of new high-performance buildings and communities as well as those focusing on improving the performance of existing ones through retrofits or adaptive reuse are welcomed.
