Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Archaeozoology and paleopathology are an important branches of modern sciences devoted to the description of human–animal–environment relations in the past. The International Council for Archaeozoology and Animal Paleopathology Working Group is the field of international scientific exchange, which has borne fruit with periodic meetings of scientists over the years. The 8th Meeting of the ICAZ Animal Palaeopathology Working Group—‘Function creates shape or shape creates function. Cases of pathology as a scientific bridge between palaeontology and archaeozoology’—takes places in Wroclaw (Poland) between 18-21 May 2022 and is not only a good opportunity for presenting results achieved during studies of archaeozoological and paleontological bone material assemblages, but also for trying to answer the paleopathological questions and the morphological circumstance descriptions, which must also be taken into account. The 31st anniversary of the first ICAZ Meeting in Poland, which took place in 1971, seems to be a good occasion for a small historic summaries.
The aim of the Special Issue is to publish the most interesting results of archaeozoological, paleontological and paleopathological studies, which were presented during the 8th Meeting of the ICAZ Animal Palaeopathology Working Group—‘Function creates shape or shape creates function. Cases of pathology as a scientific bridge between palaeontology and archaeozoology’—18–21 May 2022, Wroclaw (Poland).
The scope of our interest consists in the possible wide description of human–animal–environment relations in the past based on the accessible results and conclusions of contemporary studies on archaeozoological and paleontological bone materials. Especially important are the signs of pathological changes visible in skeletal materials, which can be a good source of knowledge about health status, animal use and animal care, and human intentional activities (animal domestication, hunting, breeding and consumption) in the past.
We invite you to submit both original articles and review articles describing the original findings from exact sites, single cases of pathologies in skeletal remains and larger review studies devoted to problems, tendencies, methodologies, etc., in modern archaeozoology, paleontology and paleopathology.
