Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The One Health /One Medicine concept has increasingly been applied to clinical and biological research in the sciences. Accordingly, studies have shown that humans and other species, especially companion animals, share not only the genetic predisposition but also the epigenetic influences, environmental and lifestyle aspects of health and disease.

With this Special Issue, we invite you to contribute an article addressing one of these topics that affect small animals, including:

current and future advances in immune tolerance;

susceptibility and resistance of small animals to the novel human coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2;

novel therapies for immune -mediated disorders;

the microbiome and gut-brain axis in health and disease;

cellular biomarkers of oxidative stress, diagnosis, management and treatment (Dodds & Callewaert);

current approaches to diagnosis and managing diabetes;

adrenal disorders, both over – and under-active; and

small animal thyroid dysfunction as a model of human Hashimoto’s and Graves’ diseases.

The goal of this issue is to compare and contrast the underlying factors that contribute to our basic understanding of the conditions listed above in humans and the companion animals with whom we share our lives. At the same time, the ever- expanding human population faces global warming and reduction in the natural resources and biodiversity we require and need to sustain life.  This will impact not only future generations, but also the needs of all competing species.  By knowing more about the basic features of comparative medicine and science, we can best be prepared to sustain and embrace the One Health/One Medicine concept in the future.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Animals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
