Special Issue Information
Dear colleague,
The success of captive fish breeding depends largely on establishing species-specific conditions that mimic natural spawning conditions. Virtually all species have evolved unique ways to spawn and rear their offspring. Moreover, fish reproduction can also be classified in a few key breeding behaviors such as nest building, egg deposition and burying, egg scattering, live bearing, and mouth brooding. Considering the vast diversity of species, manifold habitats and behaviors of fishes, natural breeding, and reproduction in captivity has been successful for some, difficult for others, and unsuccessful for many species. However, human activities such as recreational fishkeeping, aquaculture, biomedical research, and conservation of natural diversity all depend on efficient spawning and reproduction methods in captivity.
For this Special Issue, we are inviting manuscripts, reviews, and original research articles based on the fascinating diversity of fish breeding. All manuscripts should provide some introductory background on the natural spawning conditions and behaviors of the respective species and compare these with current methods and protocols used in captivity. The goal of this Special Issue will be to improve captive fish propagation for species that were previously difficult or impossible to breed in captivity. For species already successfully propagated, for example, in aquaculture or biomedical laboratories, efficient husbandry and experimental reproducibility will benefit from shared, standardized breeding methods and harmonized approaches.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Animals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1800 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
