Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Water scarcity and inefficient fertilizer use have long challenged global agricultural sustainability. Traditional irrigation practices often overlook the coupled dynamics of water and nutrients, leading to low use efficiencies and environmental pollution. Over the past decade, emerging technologies such as precision irrigation, sensor-based monitoring, and fertigation have gradually reshaped crop water–nutrient management, yet there remains a need to integrate these innovations into practical, climate-smart agricultural systems.

This Special Issue aims to present cutting-edge research on innovative irrigation technologies and the coordinated regulation of water and nutrients for improved crop production. The scope of this research includes, but is not limited to, novel irrigation systems (e.g., drip, subsurface, and deficit irrigation), smart fertigation strategies, real-time soil–crop sensing, and decision support tools. The ultimate goal is to enhance water and nutrient use efficiencies while maintaining or increasing crop yield and quality.

We invite submissions of original research articles, reviews, and technical notes that address innovative solutions for irrigation and crop water–nutrient regulation. Topics of interest include field experiments on novel irrigation–fertigation systems, modeling and simulation studies, sensor and automation technologies, assessments of water–nutrient interaction effects on crop physiology, and strategies for mitigating environmental impacts. Submissions that integrate multiple disciplines or demonstrate practical scalability are particularly encouraged.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Agronomy is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
