Dear Colleagues,
The agri-food sector is facing growing challenges related to postharvest losses, food safety, environmental sustainability and supply chain efficiency. Innovative strategies integrating advanced conditioning; storage technologies and intelligent, active and sustainable packaging systems are emerging as key solutions to extend shelf life, maintain product quality, reduce food waste and monitor the food chain throughout agricultural and food value chains.
This Special Issue aims to unite recent advances in intelligent and active conditioning, storage and packaging systems for agricultural produce and food products, focusing on the development of bio-based materials, active and smart packaging technologies and digital monitoring approaches that enhance product preservation while minimizing environmental impact.
Particular attention will be given to approaches involving conditioning and storage technologies, as well as the use of biomaterials, nanotechnology, natural bioactive compounds and real-time monitoring tools, to improve and monitor food quality, safety and traceability during handling, storage and distribution stages across pre- and postharvest periods.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Conditioning and preservation technologies for agricultural produce and food products
- Advanced storage systems (e.g., controlled atmosphere, cold chain optimization and non-thermal treatments)
- Active and intelligent packaging systems incorporating natural bioactive compounds
- Bio-based, biodegradable packaging materials using nanotechnology
- Encapsulation and controlled release systems for antimicrobial and antioxidant agents
- Sensor-integrated packaging for real-time monitoring of freshness, quality and safety
- AI-, IoT- or blockchain-based solutions for traceability and shelf-life prediction
- Sustainable packaging strategies based on agro-industrial by-products and circular economy approaches
- Life cycle assessment (LCA), regulatory aspects and safety evaluation of innovative conditioning, storage and packaging systems

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
