Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The concept of the circular and green economy was established in recent decades, when it was proposed to organize the economy as a circular system to ensure sustainable development.

The idea is based on the so-called 3Rs Principle—i.e., reduction, reuse, and recycle. This new economic model bests the traditional model based on the principle of “take, make, and dispose”. Following sustainable intensification, the agri-food systems may obtain desirable outcomes (i.e., a larger supply of food) and improved environmental conditions. As a result, the sustainable management of agri-food supply chains has become a strategic process enabling farmers and producers to establish greener production and consumption systems, based on reuse and recycling. Greener agri-food systems encourage the use of raw materials known as technical and biological nutrients, which do not have a detrimental impact on the environment.
