Agrifood systems are embedded in complex environments and face conflicting incentives and signals arising from markets and society, putting pressure on their sustainability. Circular economy offers pathways to move towards a more balanced interplay between markets, society and the planet. Research in agricultural economics is already leading this change. However, the complexity of the interactions between the several dimensions of sustainability calls for novel approaches and tools to evaluate circular economy strategies and policies. Impact evaluation tools are crucial to design the institutional transition pathway towards more circular agrifood systems and, hence, contribute to food security, sustainable resource management, innovation and job creation through bio-based knowledge systems. This Special Issue will be dedicated to showcasing advances in circular agriculture and the multi-faceted challenges related to sustainability, including: low-waste food chains, balance between low-tech and high-tech agriculture, synergistic resource cycles, bioeconomic modelling and impact assessment tools.Prof. Maria Blanco
