Dr. Xolani Lawrence Mhlongo holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing, specialising in Nursing Education, and is an academic and nurse educator with extensive experience across clinical practice, public nursing education, and higher education in South Africa. He began his professional career as a professional nurse in the public hospital sector, where he worked from 2011 to 2015 and developed strong clinical competence while delivering patient-centred care within resource-constrained health systems. Motivated by a passion for teaching and professional development, he transitioned into nursing education after obtaining a qualification in nursing education and was appointed as a lecturer at a public nursing college in June 2015, a position he held until June 2020. In July 2020, following the completion of his Master’s degree in 2019, Dr. Mhlongo joined the Department of Nursing at Durban University of Technology as a lecturer, a role he continues to hold to date. His scholarly work is closely aligned with his professional background and focuses primarily on nursing education, student support and retention, extended curriculum programmes, and teaching and learning innovations. He has a particular interest in exploring the lived experiences of nursing students, developing inclusive and supportive educational frameworks, and advancing evidence-based strategies to improve academic outcomes in health sciences education.
