Author Biographies

Sofia Caggese received her M.Sc. degree in Aerospace Engineering from Polytechnic of Turin, Italy, in 2022. Since then, she has been a Research Fellow, at Polytechnic of Turin and at Leonardo S.p.A., where she currently serves as Technical Coordinator for the Advanced Thermal Management System within the Advanced Power & Energy Systems Lab. Her activities range from preliminary design to off-design performance assessment of Thermal Management System (TMS) solutions, with a focus on investigating innovative, integrated, and complex technologies and architectures.
Flavio Di Fede received his M.Sc. degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Polytechnic of Turin, Italy, in 2019. After graduation, he worked for six years as a researcher, gaining significant experience at the Polytechnic of Turin, within the Leonardo Labs Electrification Research Unit, and at the Advanced Power & Energy Systems Laboratory of Leonardo S.p.A. In recent years, his professional activities have increasingly focused on test engineering, with specific involvement in testing and validation activities of electro-mechanical and thermal systems. He is currently part of the Innovation Management & Technology Labs at Leonardo Aeronautics, where he contributes to the development, verification, and advancement of innovative technologies for modern and future aeronautical applications.
Associate Professor of Aerospace Systems at Polytechnic of Turin. Since 2006 he has been carrying out his research activities at the AeroSpace Systems Engineering Team. His main skills are focused on: conventional and electrified on-board systems design and modelling, multidisciplinary design and optimization of conventional and hybrid electric aircraft, life cycle cost and life cycle assessment of novel technologies and reliability, availablity, maintainability, safety estimation. He is partecipating in several national and international research projects. He is currently leading, on behalf of Polithecnic of Turin, the research activities in the following international projects: Clean Aviation “HERA” and Horizon Europe “Colossus”.
Grazia Accardo earned her Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and, following 15 years of research experience at universities and research centers, she joined Leonardo S.p.A. as the Principal Investigator of the Advanced Power & Energy Systems Laboratory. Her work at Leonardo spans propulsion systems and the integration of diverse onboard equipment. Under her leadership, the lab has developed innovative algorithms and models for energy management and analysis of key components, including electrochemical energy storage, hydrogen storage and handling, fuel cells, electrical machines, and thermal management systems.
