Author Biographies

Dr Angela Hibbs is an Assistant Professor in the School of Sport, Exercise, and Rehabilitation at Northumbria University and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Authority.  Angela is also the school’s employability and graduate outcomes lead.  Angela’s research career has focused on the complex and dynamic student transition journey into higher education as well as exploring the student experience in higher education and the importance of belonging in this environment.
Dr Rick Hayman is an Associate Professor in Sport Coaching at Northumbria University, United Kingdom. He is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy with research interests in student transitions and inclusive education. Rick works with learners from all backgrounds and under-represented groups, providing them with the support they need to successfully integrate and then succeed at university and beyond.
Miss Amy Tomlinson is a Lecturer in Clinical Anatomy at Hull York Medical School. She has over ten years’ experience in further and higher education and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her research interests lie in transition to higher education and compassionate pedagogy, areas in which she actively publishes and presents.

Dr Mariana Kaiseler is a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology and Departmental Lead for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Institute of Sport, UK. She is an HCPC-Registered Sport Psychologist, Chartered Psychologist, and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, as well as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Mariana’s research examines how individual differences particularly gender, culture, personality, and neurodiversity influence stress, coping, and wellbeing across performance and educational settings.
Mr David Stephens is a Lecturer in Sport Coaching & Physical Education at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, United Kingdom and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. With extensive teaching background in further and higher education and coach development, his research interests include educational experiences, transitioning into new learning contexts and the development of expertise.
Professor Matthew Timmis is Director of Student Outcomes and Professor Sport and Exercise Sciences Education at Anglia Ruskin University, UK. As an accredited sport and exercise scientist (pedagogy) he sits on committees and advisory groups within his professional body (CASES) regarding education and programme endorsement. Mat’s pedagogic research seeks to understand the experiences (and barriers) of students transitioning into HE and mechanisms to support student success.
Professor Remco Polman has been a successful higher education leader in Australia and the UK and is currently an adjunct professor at Federation University and Queensland University of Technology. He has published extensively (230 peer-reviewed journal articles and 2 books) and was in the top 2% of cited authors in the world in 2022 and 2023 (Elsevier & Stanford University). He has particular interest how individuals cope with stress and factors which influence this process.
