Gemma Musacchio is a scientist and seismologist at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), where she has worked since 2001. She is currently engaged in science and risk communication. She holds a Laurea (1991) and a PhD (1993) in Earth Sciences from the University of Milan, and a Master’s degree (2016) in
Scientific Journalism and Institutional Communication of Science from the University of Ferrara, awarded summa cum laude. She has extensive international research experience. She conducted postdoctoral work at the Universities of Karlsruhe and Kiel (Germany) and at the United States Geological Survey (USA). She also served as a research associate at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. She is the author of numerous scientific journal articles and book contributions, and has led several national and international research and outreach projects. Her research interests have evolved over time, from early work on lithospheric structures, rock physics, and seismic anisotropy to a current focus on disaster science and the effective communication of natural hazards and risk.
