Author Biographies

Nancy Frey is a professor of educational leadership at San Diego State University and a teacher leader at Health Sciences High in San Diego, CA.  She is a credentialed special educator, reading specialist, and administrator in California. Her interests center on quality instruction, literacy development, and leadership.  She is the co-author of Teaching Foundational Skills to Adolescents.
Douglas Fisher is a professor of educational leadership at San Diego State University and a teacher leader at Health Sciences High School in San Diego, CA.  He is a credentialed teacher and administrator in California.  His interests include leadership, adolescent development, literacy, and teacher development.  He is the co-author of  The courage to learn: Building risk-ready classrooms where students thrive.
Kierstan Barbee is a learning consultant for Corwin, having been a teacher and district leader focused on assessment.  She is a credentialed teacher in Texas and is interested in the link between assessment and instruction as well as quality learning experiences.  She is the co-author of Instructional strategies to move learning forward: 50+ tools that support the gradual release of responsibility.
Sarah Ortega is the Director of Multilingual Learner Support at Health Sciences High, having been an elementary educator and administrator. She is a credentialed bilingual teacher and leader in California.  Her interests center on language development, literacy, and quality learning.  She is the co-author of Teaching students to drive their learning: A Playbook on engagement and self-regulation.
