Author Biographies

Frauke Musial holds a Ph.D. in Biopsychology and serves as a Professor of "Healthcare Research - Alternative Treatment" at the National Research Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NAFKAM), Department of Community Medicine, UiT – The Arctic University of Norway, in Tromsø, Norway. She is a psychologist with an extensive neuroscience research background in biopsychology, psychophysiology, and pain. In 2015, she became Norway's first professor of alternative treatment methods. Her scientific work spans the neuroscientific foundations of emotions and pain, as well as non-pharmacological interventions for managing chronic pain conditions, including acupuncture, manual therapy, and traditional massage techniques. Additionally, she is a recognized expert in research methodology for intervention studies focusing on non-pharmacological treatments for pain syndromes. Before joining NAFKAM in 2011, Frauke Musial led the research department of the Chair of Integrative Medicine and Naturopathy at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Since 2022, she has been serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Karger journal Complementary Medicine Research. Outside of her professional life, Frauke Musial is a passionate equestrian and para-rider.
