Luis Goya earned his Pharmacy degree (1981) and PhD with Extraordinary Award (1987) from the Complutense University of Madrid, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley (1989-1992). He is now a Research Investigator at the Spanish National Research Council's (CSIC) Nutrition and Metabolism Department, where he co-founded and co-leads the Metabolism and Bioactivity of Phytochemicals (BIOCELL) research group. His work in nutritional biochemistry has resulted in 135+ SCI publications (75% in Q1 journals) and 13 book chapters; leadership in 25 research projects and 9 industry contracts; and recognition, including the Reina Sofía Prize for deficiency prevention. His research topics mainly include: molecular mechanisms of dietary bioactive compounds, phytochemical metabolism, and biochemical pathways of nutritional intervention, with particular focus on translating laboratory findings into practical dietary applications through industry-academia collaborations.
Raquel Mateos received her Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from the University of Salamanca (1995), her PhD in Chemistry from the University of Seville (2002), and her Bachelor's degree in Clinical Psychology from UNED (2022), and is currently serving as a Tenured Scientist at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). She leads the research group Phytochemicals, Nutrition, and Health (PHYTOCHEMICALS), where her work bridges fundamental and applied science to explore how dietary bioactive compounds contribute to health. Her research centers on the concept of Nutrition for Integral Health, with an emphasis on the characterization of phytochemicals in foods, plant extracts, and nutraceuticals. She examines their bioavailability and mechanisms of action through basic and applied studies, both in vitro/ex vivo (cell lines) and human
intervention studies. Alongside her scientific career, she is strongly committed to public engagement in science, and currently directs the
educational outreach project SuperEscolares Sanos y Científicos (www.superescolares.es).
