Professor David Ronald Brown earned his BSc, MSc, and PhD from the University of Sydney by the age of 25. He completed his doctoral research on nerve regeneration under the supervision of Professor Max Bennett. He is now a professor of biochemistry at the University of Bath, having previously held positions at the University of Cambridge, the University of Göttingen, and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His prion disease research has resulted in multiple textbooks and numerous publications, as well as advisory roles, including membership of the UK's Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee (SEAC), and editorial positions for four scientific journals, including the Journal of Neurochemistry. His main research topics include metal–protein interactions in neurodegeneration, particularly the binding of manganese to prion proteins, the antioxidant functions of prion proteins, and environmental risk factors for BSE/vCJD.
