Dr. Getahun Agga is a Research Microbiologist at USDA-ARS, Food Animal Environmental Systems Research Unit, Bowling Green, Kentucky, USA. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) with distinction from Addis Ababa University in 2003, his MSc in Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics from Utrecht University in 2008, and his Ph.D. in Pathobiology (with Epidemiology focus) from Kansas State University in 2013. He joined the USDA in December 2013 as a postdoctoral associate, subsequently occupying a permanent position as a scientist in 2017. Dr. Agga’s research involves understanding the epidemiology and ecology of antimicrobial resistance and foodborne pathogens at the animal–environmental–human interface. He mainly focuses on pre-harvest food safety and animal manure management to mitigate the spread of bacteria of public health importance into the environment and through the food chain. He also tries to understand the relationship between antimicrobial use in food animals and the emergence of antimicrobial resistance; he hopes to help develop mitigation measures, such as antimicrobial stewardship, as well as an alternative to antibiotics, such as the use of phages, probiotics, vaccines, and organic production. He is a member of the International Association for Food Protection (IAFP).
