Author Biographies

Dr. Haotian Shi is currently an Assistant Professor of Advanced Manufacturing in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Western. Prior to joining Western, he was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Cambridge, UK, developing multi-length scale hierarchical fiber-based printing technologies for fog harvesting and breath sensing applications. He received his Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering Science from the University of Toronto in 2014 and then completed his master’s degree (2016) and Ph.D. (2020) both in Mechanical Engineering, as part of the Toronto Institute for Advanced Manufacturing (TIAM) at the University of Toronto, with a specialization in designing hierarchical functionalized nanostructures for energy storage. In addition, he was a recipient of the NSERC PGS-D doctoral award, the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS), and the NSERC PDF Fellowship. His research interests include energy storage; ferrography; debris; oil; eddy current effect; magnetic sensors; biomedical sensors.

Prof. Hongpeng Zhang is a Professor and a Supervisor at the Marine Engineering College of Dalian Maritime University. He obtained his PhD at the same university and then he was a visiting scholar at the School of Electromechanics, University of Waterloo, Canada from 2009 to 2010. He is the chairman of the popularization committee of Liaoning Shipbuilding Engineering Society, an expert of the Ministry of Science and Technology, an expert of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, a member of the Chinese Society of Measurement and Testing, and the deputy secretary general of the China Institute of Navigation's Professional Committee of Water Transportation Safety Engineering and Technology. His research fields lie in Ship Mechatronics, Intelligent Sensor Technology, Ship Pollution Prevention and Control Technology, and Microfluidic Chip Technology. In recent years, he has published more than 160 academic papers, more than 70 of which have been searched by SCI and EI. He has also co-edited one Encyclopedia of Microfluidics (in English) published by CRC and has been awarded 1 international patent, 2 PCT patents, 26 invention patents, and 15 utility model patents. He is now a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Marine Engineering, guest editor-in-chief of the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, and a member of the scientific and popularization committee of Liaoning Shipbuilding Engineering Society.
