Jo Kirby Atkinson, independent researcher. BSc in Chemistry and Zoology, University of Exeter, 1966; ALA (Associate of the Library Association), School of Librarianship, Ealing Technical College, 1968; BA Hons History of Art, Birkbeck, University of London (Courtauld Institute External Degree), 1987. Employment: Deputy Branch Librarian, London Borough of Hounslow Library Services, 1966–70; Scientific Department, The National Gallery, London, 1970–1977, 1982–7 (freelance), 1987–2009; retired, then contracted to work on the CHARISMA European project 2009–2014. Research interests: the technology of red and yellow lake pigments made from natural organic dyes; colour; colour change caused by light and other factors; the study of historical literature relating to artists’ materials and methods of painting; the trade in artists’ materials; the costs and relative value of pigments and other materials.
